Just come back from RADA showcase where a top agent friend told me she was just looking for 'pretties'.

"It's all TV and film directors are interested in now" she told me.

How marvellously depressing is that?! And not only because it radically reduces the chances for the 'not-pretties' but also because its harder to find a pretty person who is an interesting actor - which is why those who are pretty and good usually become stars.

Thank goodness theatre is still (just about) a meritocracy, or else what would have happened to Maggie Smith, Vanessa Redrave, Eileen Atkins, Brenda Blethyn...

Its extremely depressing but so true.

I say thank goodness for Neal Foster who still believes in the 'funny fat girl'

Thing that amazes me is have you only just come across this??? Most of our careers are based on the way we look.

I have just been turned down by a well respecting panto company who actually said,

"We really liked the look of her and we really want to cast her but we already have one large actor in the show and if we employ another we may get comments from the audience asking why."

No more needs to be said :)

I know it's nothing new, but to hear a top agent who I respect say she was only interested in taking on pretty people was a new low for me.
